Housekold income grew at record rate in 2015 MIKE SNIDER USA TODAY in 2015- their first significant pay increase in eight years as the U.S.
median household income rose 5.2 percent to $56,516, according to new data from the U.S. Census Bureau. But income of the typical U.S. home still remained below that of 2007, the year before the most recent recession, when median household income was $57,423. That was the last year U.S.
homes saw a significant annual increase, the bureau said. In 2014, the median income was $53,718, the bureau said in its report Income and Poverty in the United States: 2015, released Tuesday. Income in the median U.S. household peaked in 1999 at $57,909, the bureau says. The median is the middle point in which half of households would make more money, while half would fall below that point.
Still, the household income grew at the fastest rate on record, said Council of Economic Advisers Chairman Jason Furman in a blog post on the White House website. The report, he said, "shows the remarkable progress that American families have made as the recovery continues to strengthen. Income grew for households across the Fewer lack health insurance Those without be ou the full 2015 calendar year fell to 9.1 percent, or 29 million people, down from 10.4 percent or 33 million in 2014, the U.S. Census Bureau said in a separate report, "Health Insurance Coverage in the United States: 2015." income distribution, with the fastest growth among lower- and middle-income households." He also noted that the poverty rate fell faster than at any point since 1968, and the rate of those without health insurance also declined. The official poverty rate fell 13.5 percent with 43.1 million in poverty, 3.5 million less than in 2014, the bureau said.
"There was a fairly sharp drop in the poverty rate, which was consistent with the thinking that the gains in income being recorded were quite broad-based," said Gary Burtless, an economist at the Brookings Institution. However, Burtless wonders whether the increase in household income is spot on. He notes that the Census Bureau's household income findings have trailed behind that in another indicator, the Bureau of Economic Analysis' National Income and Product Accounts report. Exiled Snowden seeks pre presidential pardon White House unlikely to consider his case GREGORY KORTE TODAY USA WASHINGTON Edward Snowden, the national security whistleblower to some and traitor to others, said he will seek a pardon from President Barack Obama for his role in disclosing a series of documents showing government surveillance on American citizens. But the White House appears to be disinclined to consider his case as he remains exiled in Russia rather than face charges in federal court 1 that he violated the Espionage Act.
In an interview with the British newspaper The Guardian published Tuesday, Snowden doesn't dispute that he broke federal law by stealing secret documents about eavesdropping while employed as a contractor for the National Security Agency. "Yes, there are laws on the books that say one thing, but that is perhaps why the pardon power exists for the exceptions, for the things that may seem unlawful in letters on a page but when we look at them morally, when we look at them ethically, when we look at the results, it seems these were necessary things, these were vital things," Snowden said. Obama has given few pardons during his presidency, instead focusing his constitutional clemency power on commutations for drug offenders who he says received disproportionately long sentence as part of a decadeslong "war on drugs." And in response to a question from USA TODAY last month, Obama said he would not follow the practice of past presidents in granting last-minute, politically motivated pardons, instead requiring all pardons to go through the formal Department of Justice process. On that basis, Snowden appears ineligible for a presidential pardon. While presidents can pardon people not convicted of a crime President Gerald Ford pardoned President Richard Nixon, after all the Obama administration guidelines require an applicant to wait five years after a Snowden conviction and pass an FBI background check, a process that can take years to complete.
But Snowden's attorney told USA TODAY that position is a copout. "The Constitution didn't assign this power to the Department of Justice. It assigned it to the president," Ben Wizner said. "I would hope that President Obama would like to resolve this situation on his watch." "Mr. Snowden has been charged with serious crimes, and it's the policy of the administration that Mr.
Snowden should return to the United States and face those charges," White House press secretary Josh Earnest said. "He, of course, will be afforded due process, and there are mechanisms in our criminal justice system to ensure that he's treated fairly and consistent with the law. And that's what the president believes." Wizner, a lawyer with the American Civil Liberties Union, said he's realistic about the chances for an Obama pardon, but the pardon campaign is part of a long-term strategy to convince U.S. policymakers that Snowden's revelations were in the public interest. That argument was bolstered by no less a figure than former Attorney General Eric Holder, who said in May that Snowden "performed a public service by raising the debate" on government surveillance.
Snowden's request for a pardon also comes as the Oliver Stone biopic "Snowden" opens in theaters this weekend.
