The show goes on Jr. Fair plans bird activities despite ban By Erik Martin

Though live birds are banned from the 159th annual Great Darke County Fair, young people raising poultry will still find ways to stay busy and be rewarded for their efforts. On the heels of the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s banning of live birds from all county fairs this summer due to the threat of Avian Flu, youth poultry exhibitors at this year’s fair will have at least three ways to compete. First, Junior Fair poultry exhibitors may raise a bird to receive a premium. They may also raise a bird to receive a premium and then sell it at auction. In both these instances, exhibitors will display a poster in the Poultry Barn, consisting of three to five pictures, a paragraph about their project, feed tag, concluding statement, and name, age, and project type in the lower right corner. The third option is a 8 • DARKE COUNTY FAIR 2015

general project in which the exhibitor does not raise a bird but nonetheless completes a display board to be shown at the Youth Building or the Poultry Barn. With or without a live bird, each project will be graded by poultry judges, just as if the Junior Fair members had a live bird on
the premises. For poultry exhibitors, the schedule is as follows:August 21 — 5:30 p.m. Mandatory meeting of Junior Fair members, Poultry Barn August 22 — 9 a.m., Junior Fair Poultry Show, Poultry Barn August 23 — 12 p.m.,
Junior Fair Poultry Meat Classes & Showmanship, Poultry Barn August 26 — 5 p.m., Junior Fair Rabbit and Poultry Sale, Poultry Barn In addition, the Junior Fair will offer poultry-related activities for both young and old. Junior Fair Director Beth Martin said that on August 26 from 10 a.m. to noon, Junior Fair members will be competing in a game called “Avian Bowl.” “It is similar to [the gameshow] Jeopardy, and there will be prizes awarded,” she said. Other events include an egg contest, an egg-decorating contest, rooster crowing and turkey calling contests, a chicken dress up contest, and a pee wee poultry show. For the activities involving eggs, Poultry Secretary Emily Osborne said that there should be no threat of transmitting Avian Flu if the eggs brought to the fair are thoroughly washed beforehand. For more information on the Junior Fair, go online to www.darkecountyjrfair.com or call Martin by phone at 937-273-5638. When country musician Hunter Hayes takes the stage at this year’s Darke County Fair, he says fans should expect to see an energetic performance. “My show is a great cardio workout,” he says, “a lot of running, a lot of jumping.” The Louisiana-born singer-songwriter, 23, should look to add weightlifting into that mix. In addition to the more than 30 instruments he can play, Hayes may need more muscle to carry the ever-growing number of trophies he’s been awarded in his young career. Along with winning awards from the Country Music Association, BMI, Teen Choice and People’s Choice Awards, among others, he has also been a Grammy Award nominee (five total) for three years running.
“A Grammy nomination is so huge,” he said, “it blows my mind that we’ve had three straight years of Grammy nominations.” “Five nominations? Far beyond what I would have dreamed or hoped for at this point in my career.” Of the awards he’s taken home so far, he calls the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Male Country Artist the one that means the most. “That was a pretty serious category to be in,” he admits. “The fact that we won, the fact that the fans rallied behind me and supported me in that way. I very proudly display it at home. It’s special that the fans showed their love that way.” Though his music appeals to a younger demographic of country music fans, Hayes says he gathers inspiration anywhere he can find it. “I listen to everything,

I’m inspired by everything,” he said. “But it all comes back home to me — country music is home.” When asked to describe his musical influences, Hayes said, “There are so many, too many, to list,” but cites singer-songwriters Lori McKenna and Gordie Sampson, performers Garth Brooks, Chris Martin of Coldplay, Michael Buble, and Stevie Wonder, and guitarist Lindsey Buckingham as among those on that list. His debut studio album, the eponymous “Hunter Hayes,” was released in 2011, followed by the studio album, “Storyline,” in 2014. He has three number-
one singles including “Wanted,” which hit number one on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs with sales of the song reaching multiplatinum status in both the United States and Canada. Hayes said there is no definitive schedule in place for a third studio album. He says he and his band have been putting out new songs at their leisure and do not feel constrained by how music has been issued in the past. “This is not something we have a plan for,” he says. “We’ve just been putting out new music this summer one track at a time.” “I want to listen to the fans, to hear how often they
want new music, and when they want it. I’m seeing a shift in what the definition of a ‘record’ is, and I’m trying to see what this next chapter in the music world becomes. Because of this shift, I’m super stoked for these new options. It’s so much more fun doing it this way.” “I wrote a hundred songs for my last record — we recorded 12. It excites me that we can release music in a new way.” Darke County Fair concertgoers will be privy to some of Hayes’ new songs at the performance, in addition to familiar works from his previous albums. “It will be a good mix, a

little bit of everything,” he promises. Ultimately, Hayes hopes that fans see his music as being “written from the heart.” “Music is very powerful,” he said. “It can lift you up. Even sad songs make you feel better. I want to have a catalog of songs that do that, that were a part of people’s lives. I hope and dream that something I’ve created does that, for someone.” Hunter Hayes performs at the Darke County Fairgrounds August 23 beginning at 8 p.m. Erik Martin may be reached by email at emartin civitasmedia.com or by phone at 937-569-4314.

Fourman crowned king 40 years ago By Linda Moody
DARKE COUNTY — The Great Darke County Fair has featured a queen contest since 1962, but it wasn’t until 1975 that kings were added to the royal court. Elvin Fourman, who now lives in neighboring Preble County and an open exhibitor at the Great Darke County Fair, was crowned the first king. “I had graduated from Arcanum High School,” he said. ” I was an FFA member, and you could be in junior fair until you were 20. I was asked to represent the FFA and I said I’d be willing to do it and succeeded.” He believes the pageant in which he participated had more than the five male contestants that were competing this year. Because 1976 was the Bicentennial year, contestants were to dress accordingly. “I think I wore knickers and a ruffled shirt,” he said. “It was kind of frightening.” He explained that that it being the first year with king candidates included in the pageant, it was kind of a learning experience.

Elvin Fourman was crowned the first king of the Great Darke County Fair in 1975.
“I didn’t go to an other fairs like they do today,” he said. Fourman is the eighth child and seventh son of the late Gerald and Catherine Fourman. Now 60, Fourman is working in construction and works on his farm. He had worked for Allied Broadcast in Richmond, Indiana, for 20 years which was bought out by Harris and moved to Mason, Ohio. He continued on with that company for 6 1/2 years before
everybody got laid off. “I have farmed pretty much all of the time and I used to be a 4-H adviser,” he said. He himself had been in 4-H for a few years as a youth but was in FFA all of high school. Today, he is a member of the Arcanum FFA Alumni. He is somewhat “bummed” about the poultry show ruling this year because of Avian flu. “I show ducks and geese at the Ohio and Indiana state fairs and used to take them to Kentucky and Michigan state fairs,” he said. “Now, I have birds with no place to go.” He said he has 600 poultry and dairy cows on his farm, which is near New Paris and Eldorado. “My niece, Krista Fourman, helps me show dairy cows at the Darke County Fair,” he said. “She enters them and I haul them. Lots of friends help show, and my neighbor girl will show for me in Preble County.” His dairy cows will be among entries in the open show this year at the fair. “I’ll be there Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday,” he said. “Without my poultry there this year, I might get to spend time d enjoying the fair here.” Those who became kings in the ensuing years have been Vareghan

Campbell: 2015 parade marshal By Linda Moody
2015 PARADE MARSHAL
lmoody civitasmedia.com
Velma Campbell, former director on the Darke County Agricultural Society (senior fair board), will be the grand marshal of the Parade of Champions. “I was shocked, humbled and somewhat undeserving,” Campbell said. “I was just doing my job. I’m happy about it.” Campbell was elected in August 1998 for a oneyear term. The fair board expanded to 11 members in 1999 and she was re-elected that August for a full three-
year term, making 1999 her first full Fair as a board member. During her tenure as a board member, Campbell held the following officer positions. 2000-01: Vice president (two years), 200306; president (four years), 2007-08; and treasurer (two years). She either chaired or assisted with the following departments and committees: Cheerleading contest/16 years (she was involved with the cheerleading contest from its beginning at the 1991 fair); Domestic Arts/16 years; Swine Department/13

years; vocational education committee/one year; sponsor committee/eight years; parade committee/two years; transportation committee/one year and parking committee/one year. The Ohio Department of Agriculture presented Campbell the Outstanding Fair Supporter award for District 2 which includes 11 counties in Ohio on Jan. 4, 2006. This award is given for exceptional service provided to the fair. She and husband Dave have been married for 60 years and are the parents of three children, Doug (deceased), Brenda Manning and Greg. They have seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She is still active at the Great Darke County Fair and continues to assist with the cheerleading contest and helping usher at the grandstand. “We’re there everyday and camp,” said Campbell, who indicated she is still catching up on tasks around the home that she didn’t get done when she was serving
on the fair board. Campbell, the former Velma Rhotehamel, was in 4-H as a child, and was an adviser as an adult for 41 years; most of that time with the Ansonia 4-H Club. The daughter of the late L.G. and Bertha (Petering) Rhotehamel, she spent her first four years of school at Ansonia and the remainder of that time at Greenville, from where she graduated in 1954. Because of her love for children, she decided to go to college and get a degree. “I had my three kids and babysat for Louise Lucas’ kids, and she was going to college and told me what she was doing,” Campbell said in a former interview. “I thought to myself, ‘I think I’d like that.” So she pursued that dream and studied at the Miami branch at Piqua, then graduated from Miami University and even got her master’s in education there. Campbell started her teaching career at Ansonia in 1967, after being hired by Dr. Marlin Thompson. She
remained true to the school for 26 years before retiring “I taught second grade for five years, then was asked by Marlin to teach at the middle school,” she recalled. “I told him I would give it a try for one year and stayed there the rest of my career. I taught seventh and eighthgrade reading and spelling and anything with language arts.” She was also the spelling bee coordinator for the school. Campbell was the first woman to serve on the fair board and was its first woman president. She joins the ranks of others who served as parade marshals over the years. They are: • 2014 Francis Byers • 2013 Lester Ward • 2012 Keith Smith • 2011 Robert and Onda Matthews • 2010 Mark and Patty Cotter • 2009 Dennis Baker (Cathy) • 2008 Lowell Dill (Barb) • 2007 Junior and Rosalie Schultz

GREENVILLE - Jenna Cline and Thomas Shaw, last year’s Darke County Fair Junior Queen and King, emceed this year’s pageant and it was obvious they had fun during their reign. Members of their court were (first runners-up) Morgan McKinney and Andrew Wright; (second runners-up) Courtney Rose and Brad Slyder; and (third runnersup) MacKenzie Dirmeyer and Lane Manning. As is tradition, a slide show is shown at each pag-
eant and the court ends the program by telling of their favorite memories, which was also done this year. Being fair king had always been Shaw’s goal he told The Daily Advocate last year. “My sister was fair queen 10 years ago, and I knew then that I wanted to be king. I’d like to tell the other candidates, ‘Don’t give up,’” he said. His plans are to earn degrees in both agriculture education and agriculture communications and subsequently become an agriculture science education instructor for a local high school. In the meantime, he plans to continue raising and showing registered dairy cattle on the family farm. This summer, he had the opportunity to visit Costa Rica through the National FFA Organization. “I was one of only 65-ish students and advisers from around the country who was granted this opportunity,”
he said. “Ohio had the most representation with 10 students. Throughout my trip, we took time to educate ourselves on the agriculture industry in Costa Rica as well as tour the tropical area.” He said the trip was part of a Stars and Proficiency seminar trip he won. He said their trip was focused on learning about the diversity of other agricultural industries. Shaw is now interning with Harvest Land-Co-op as a field tech based out of Pitsburg. In the fall, he will be returning to Wilmington College a s a sophom*ore, majoring in ag ed and ag communications. He did all this while being a state fair officer and state

Fairgoers reminded of healthy tips
FAIR SAFETY
As another fair season is about to begin, fairgoers are reminded to use good sense and safe practices to protect the health of themselves, their children and the animals at the fair. “With fair season upon us, we want to remind folks that some illness, such as influenza viruses, are commonly carried by livestock and can be directly transmitted between animals and humans in the same way those illnesses are often transmitted between people,” said Ohio Department of Health Director Richard Hodges.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises the following when attending fairs: • Locate hand washing stations, and wash your hands with soap and running water often, including after going on a ride, before eating and drinking, after removing soiled clothes, and especially after petting an animal or touching any part of an animal’s pen. • Don t take food or drinks into animal areas or put anything into your mouth while in an animal area. • Don t take toys paci
fiers, cups, baby bottles or strollers into livestock barns. Bacteria and viruses can be transferred from animals to people on these
objects. Parents should leave the strollers outside and carry their small children in the animal areas. • Older adults pregnant

women, young children and any people with weakened immune systems should consider avoiding the animal areas. • Wash clothing and shoes after a visit. Influenza is not the only danger. E. coli infection is a much more prevalent problem. A cluster of E. coli cases in North Dakota this year has been linked to a common fair. This illness has in the past been linked to fairs and petting zoos, as the animals can carry infection without showing any symptoms. “With Ohio being home to In store 94 county and independent FAIR fairs, we are agricultural fortunate SPECIALenough to have

Granpa Cratchet brings chickens to fair Even though chickens have been banned from from fair this year, Granpa Cratchet will defy the order with the grand opening of his Chicken Coop and Road Side Cafe — well, sort of. Puppet chickens don’t really defy anything except ol’ Granpa’s orders. Granpa Cratchet will be strolling the midway and performing all during the fair. To see what kind of hijinks the old coot gets up to, here’s a recent tale of his misadventures: Just this past week, local oldster/prankster Grapa Cratchet lost control — again — of his old truck
while coming down Big Haller Road. Those first on the scene thought the “big landing” had occurred and space aliens were taking over. Little fluffy white tufts were falling out of the sky, and an out-of-control vehicle of some unusual form had been seen streaking across the county just minutes earlier, prompting several calls to the local sheriff’s office. Closer examination revealed the white tufts to

be feathers, so with no proof of aliens, the local members of the Sharpsville Chapter of BARF (Bi-Planetary Alien Research Forum), who had been first on the scene, dismissed the incident and adjourned to the local general store to discuss the impact of feathers. When the sheriff arrived at the scene and the dust settled, the lawman discovered it was nothing more than Granpa Cratchet gone out of control in his old truck, this time landing smack dab in the middle of Granma’s chicken coop. The supposed aliens were just Granma’s poor chickens, squished beyond all recognition as anything from planet Earth. When Granpa was finally dislodged from the chicken feeder, head trauma was suspected, because he kept rambling incoherently. Then investigators realized he was just muttering on about what was going to happen to him when Granma found out what he’d done to her coop.
Granpa claims his brakes went out, but most folks suspect it was his eyesight that went out. The whole sordid incident served as inspiration for Granpa, who decided to open a new restaurant featuring assorted squished chicken dinners. He already has started a promotional campaign with such catchy slogans as “Chicken is more tender when scrapped from a fender” and “Chicken tastes real good right off a truck hood.” Granpa Cratchet will bring his old truck to the fair midway as part of his 2015 “Work Together Tour,” along with Cousin Clem and Granma, too. Clem will demonstrate his new hydropowered atomic chicken cooker and Granma will wait tables, while Granpa tries to catch some chickens. The fun and educational show will be offered free with regular admission throughout the fair.

Wambold’s Animals to entertain, educate Robert and Diane Moyer, of Orange Park, Florida, have been in the business of training and caring for exotic and notso-exotic animals for more than 30 years. Diane is a seventhgeneration circus operator, but Robert started out in a quiet life as a banker’s son before the bigtop and sawdust beckoned. The pair owned a 2,000-seat, three-ring circus before the economic impact of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks nearly
shut them down. They decided instead to downsize, and “Wambold’s Amazing Animals” was born. The show features performances of tigers and ligers, and miniature horses, along with all-day animal exhibits, including the camel and llama exhibit, featuring a dancing dromedary. Visitors to the Great Darke County Fair can see 30-minute performances of Wambold’s Amazing Animals, featuring a Siberian tiger, a white
tiger, a Bengal tiger and a liger, which is a hybrid cross between a male lion and a female tiger. Ligers are believed to be the largest of all living felines, and they exist only in captivity because their parent species do not have territories that overlap in the wild. The show promises to be educational as well as entertaining, teaching the audience about the threats to tigers in the wild and what needs to be done to prevent extinction.
Wambold’s K-9 Revue will feature a variety of dogs performing feats of daring and comedy.

JUNIOR FAIR
As usual, Junior Fair Board elections will be held during the fair this year, with several seats up for election. Junior Fair Board members serve two-year terms and re-election years for them are staggered, so at least one seat in each department is up for election every year. The board has representatives from every youth organization that participates in the fair, according to Beth Martin, Junior Fair coordinator. Voting takes place Sunday and Mon-

day at the fair, with a couple of exceptions. Elections for the horse department are on Saturday and for the dog department is on Wednesday. Junior Fair participants can vote for representatives in the departments which they exhibit only. Those wishing to serve on Junior Fair Board may only serve in a department in which they exhibit, and if they exhibit in more than one department, they must choose which one they want to represent on the ballot. There are 42 members of the board. Martin said the Junior Fair Board members are responsible for over-
seeing Junior Fair shows, including showmanship and the general shows. They institute the rule changes that are suggested to them by committee. They participate in committees and oversee some other events as well. They also are in charge of handling special department-specific tasks, such as the king and queen competitions for individual departments. The Junior Fair Board meets every other month during the year and about every other day during the fair itself. Actions and rule changes decided upon by the Junior Fair Board are presented to the Fair Board for approval.
