Twenty-seven years after the release of the the slasherI Know What You Did Last Summer(watch itHERE) and twenty-six years after the follow-upI Still Know What You Did Last Summer(watch that oneHERE), Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. might be reprising the roles of Julie James and Ray Bronson in a new sequel, which is set for aJuly 18, 2025release date… and while we’ve seen other franchises bring back original stars while ignoring previous sequels, this new film’s director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) has confirmed that the events of I Still Know What You Did Last Summer are canon and will be part of Julie and Ray’s back story in this sequel.
In response to an X post that said the new I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel “is reportedly ignoring previous sequels,” Robinson said, “It is definitely not. ISKWYDLS is canon. Hope this helps.” That said, it wouldn’t be surprising if this movie does ignore the poorly received direct-to-video sequel I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, which left Julie and Ray out but did feature a supernatural version of the killer from the first two movies.
Robinson will be directing the film from a screenplay by Leah McKendrick (M.F.A.), and McKendrick told Collidera while backthat the new sequel will reckon with “some big ideas about hero and villain, right and wrong, how your skeletons come back to haunt you. And in the age of the internet and the age where fame is such a revered concept, the creation of TikTok and social media, who is Julie James in a world where there are no secrets anymore?“ McKendrick also said that when she went in to pitch her take to Sony, the most important things they wanted to hear about were “the accident, the event that kicks it off, and who the killer is.“
I Know What You Did Last Summerwas directed byJim Gillespiefrom a screenplay byKevin Williamson that was inspired by a Lois Duncan novel. While pursuing who he thinks is responsible for the letter, Barry (Ryan Phillippe) is run over by a man with a meat hook. The bloodletting only increases from there, as the killer with the hook continues to stalk Julie, Helen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Ray (Freddie Prinze Jr.).
I Still Know What You Did Last Summerwas directed by Danny Cannon from a screenplay by Trey Callaway. The synopsis:A year after killing vengeful hit-and-run victim Ben Wills (Muse Watson), who gutted her friends with an iron hook, college student Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt) is still shaken by the experience. At the resort, Julie starts receiving threatening notes and realizes Ben is still alive.
Hewitt and Prinze are known to be in talks to return as Julie and Ray. While we wait for confirmation that their deals have closed, we know that Camila Mendes (Riverdale), Madelyn Cline (Outer Banks), Sarah Pidgeon (Tiny Beautiful Things), Tyriq Withers (Atlanta), and Jonah Hauer-King (The Little Mermaid) have signed on to star in the film.

Robinson was responding to the claim that the 2025 version of I Know What You Did Last Summer is "ignoring previous sequels." Robinson denied this assertion, saying "it is definitely not." She then went on to say that I Still Know What You Did Last Summer is canon.
Announced in early 2023, I Know What You Did Last Summer is getting a new sequel from director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and writer Lead McKendrick with Jennifer Love Hewitt. The film will be a direct sequel to the 1997 horror film, ignoring the subsequent sequels and starting a new timeline.
Weiss. The film stars Brooke Nevin, David Paetkau, Torrey DeVitto, Ben Easter, and stuntman Don Shanks as the Fisherman. It is the third installment in the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise, but does not have any of the cast returning from the first two installments, thus making it a standalone sequel.
Who is the killer and why? Ben Willis (Muse Watson) is the killer. David Egan, brother of Missy Egan, gets into a car accident with his girlfriend Susie Willis—causing her death.
Jennifer Love Hewitt is excited about a potential return in I Know What You Did Last Summer 4. The film is still in early development despite a set release date for summer 2025. Hewitt is eager to explore a more mature and powerful version of her character in the new movie.
Allison takes over Lennon's identity and pretends to be her. She was out in the road because a little bit before she got into a argument with her dad and left his car. Lennon appears then in a series of flasbacks in the following episodes.
She was also heartbroken that they'd killed the girl she loved. Although, in the end, Allison lied and told the cops that Dylan was the killer, and the season ended with Dylan in jail, seemingly sharing the word of the cult, and Allison and Margot together... forever?
The I Know What You Did Last Summer series failed as a slasher and mystery, disappointing both audience and critics. Amazon's show deviated too much from the movie, changing characters, setting, and killer's identity. Poor reception led to IKWYDLS being canceled after one season, lacking the buzz needed for success.
Did you know that both I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) and I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998) take place over the Independence Day holiday?
Picking up two years after the events of the first movie, the 1998 sequel (now streaming on Peaco*ck) finds Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt) haunted by the memory of fisherman turned gaslighting serial killer Ben Willis (Muse Watson), whose body was never found.
I did not die in that film.. Jennifer, Freddie, hit me up. There you have it. It seems like Brandy is definitely down to go back to her horror roots for a new I Know What You Did Last Summer movie.
Dylan seems torn between twin sisters, Allison and Lennon. Allison clearly likes him and he has a pull towards her but he slept with Lennon, which greatly upsets Allison. Dylan is filled with guilt when he sees how upset Allison is.
Karla Wilson was a supporting African-American female character in the 1998 sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. Karla was dating Tyrell Martin. She was a friend of Julie James and Will Benson and fellow student of the university they all attended.
It was followed by a straight-to-video standalone sequel, I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, in 2006. A direct legacy sequel to IKWYDLS and I Still Know... is scheduled to be released by Sony Pictures on July 18, 2025.
There are a few other red herrings, as well, but in the end, only three of the original group are still alive: Alison, Margot, and Dylan. Before Lennon was killed, Margot and Lennon were lovers.
Some plot points were left open for a possible season 2, but there was nothing enticing enough to warrant continuing beyond the ending viewers got. Whether people left satisfied with the ending in question is another debate entirely.
The film was followed by a sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998), in which Hewitt, Prinze Jr., and Watson reprised their roles. A straight-to-video standalone sequel, I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer (2006), featured an entirely new cast.
