Abstract:

Class of 2017 Abstract
Objectives: To describe the content of the currently enacted curriculum and confirm that the University of Arizona doctor of pharmacy degree program meets all required elements defined by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) appendix 1.Methods: A curriculum map that lists courses taken by each class years and the 2016 ACPE appendix 1 elements was developed. Course syllabi were then evaluated for class sessions that fit within specific ACPE required elements. Each 50 minutes class session was classified as a lecture unit (lu) and the total number of lu were recorded on the map. Furthermore, the redundancy of categorized sciences (biochemical, pharmaceutical, social/administrative/behavioral sciences) were evaluated with the map. Lastly, diabetes contents taught within each course and corresponding assessment tools were collected to gauge opportunities for progression of knowledge. This was done by confirming that different factors of the disease were taught within different courses. Results: Each required ACPE element was covered by at least one lu within the curriculum. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year covered 67.5%, 54.1%, and 40.5% of ACPE required elements, respectively. The subject of diabetes was covered with 24 lu, 4 lu, and 14 lu within the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd years, respectively. Progression of knowledge in diabetes was seen in the course materials. Conclusions: The enacted curriculum covers all ACPE required contents. The 1st year of the program teaches the largest percentage of required elements. All categorized sciences were reemphasized and the opportunity for progression of knowledge was shown.

Abstract:

My feet are my transportation while living in the college town of Provo, Utah. When walking, I am drawn to designs found at construction sites and office workplaces, methods of labor that are executed sequentially. These designs lead me to think about laborious jobs that I have had and time performing mundane, repetitive tasks. Walking, photographing, gathering, and transporting used material to a workspace are the preliminary actions for my art practice. Creation emerges by relating material from varying environments through their inherent patterns, sizes, and shapes. I organize elements of the everyday in a new harmonious context with each other. At the core of my art practice, I present an altered way of looking at commonplace materials.

Olson, ViAnn Esther. "Gender Differences and the Effects of Cooperative Learning in College Level Mathematics." Thesis, Curtin University, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11937/1630.

Full text

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of cooperative learning in a liberal arts mathematics course and to examine any gender-related differences in the effects of cooperative learning in terms of achievement, composition of the cooperative groups, mathematics anxiety, attitudes toward mathematics, attendance, and retention. The quasi-experimental design compared a control section using individualized learning methods with three treatment sections using cooperative learning methods based on the Learning Together model of Johnson and Johnson (1991). The compositions of the three treatment groups varied: heterogeneous ability/heterogeneous gender, heterogeneous ability/hom*ogeneous gender, and self-selected. The Academic Skills Assessment Program (ASAP) was used as a pre-test to show that the groups were equal. The Revised Math Attitude Scale and the Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale (MARS) were used as pre- and post-tests to measure changes in attitudes and anxiety. Achievement was measured by individual and group course grades. Group grades were determined by taking 67% of a student's individual exam score plus 33% of the group's average on the exam. Cooperative learning and composition of groups had no significant effect on achievement. The differences between individual and group grades were insignificant, and the group grading method benefited the grades of only five students. Attendance had a large effect on achievement, and the ASAP score and the Math Attitude Post-test were significant predictors of achievement. The MARS post-test was negatively correlated with individual course grade. While no significant gender-related differences surfaced, some trends appeared. The ASAP, MARS, and Math Attitude pre-test scores were equal, however, females achieved slightly higher course grades than males. In each of the four research groups the individual course grades were higher for females than for males. Also, females had a larger decrease in mathematics anxiety with a drop of 22 points compared to the males' drop of 10 points. Males and females each improved their attitudes toward mathematics by only one point, however, in three of the four research groups, females had smaller attitude changes than males, and two of the cooperative learning groups had decreases in their attitude scores.

Henne, Ryan Jasen. "Measure of a Man: A Grounded Theory Approach to Understanding Gay/Queer College Men’s Self Identified Masculinity." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2014. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/1807.

Full text

Abstract:

The purpose of this grounded theory study was to develop an understanding of the role that masculinity has in identity development among self-identified Gay/Queer (GQ) collegiate men. The goal of this study was to develop a theory that explains how traditional college-age GQ men view masculinity within the context of their performance as men on a college campus. 16 college-aged GQ men attending a four-year, private liberal arts institution in the southeastern United States were the subjects in this study. The participants consisted of: two first year students, three sophom*ores, two juniors, eights seniors, and one individual that who had graduated from college six weeks prior to his interview. Individuals that identified as woman, or transgender students were not included in this study.Four themes were identified from the study: Creating Identity & Exploring Sexuality; Reliance of Stereotypes; Performance & Presence; and Community Expectations & Acceptance. The overarching concept that emerged from the study was that whatever qualities the participant found to be personally attracted were the same traits that he found to be the most masculine. Limitations and recommendations for the study were also provided.

Abstract:

In French colleges, the issue of education is poorly treated : at the statutory level, it marks the low prestige of certain personnel, or certain subject matter being taught. This is the case with counsellors (conseillers d’éducation) and teaching assistants (assistants d’éducation) or, on another level, with arts education, civic education or physical education. Education’s negative connotation is confirmed in people’s discourse, which is inclined to report deficiencies. The social gap between members of the cultivated middle class and their students does not, however, predict the level of tension. First, the construction of a school environment indeed plays an importance role ; what’s more, the most difficult educational situations are precisely the ones that require us to think in educational terms. The result is often a better environment than in institutions with little exposure to difficulties. In the minds of professionals, French colleges have no other purpose than to organise the succession of courses between scholarly teachers and captivated learners. From the beginning of mass schooling, teachers actually apply “tinkered” pedagogies, unrelated to imaginary principles. In spite of these unofficial adaptations, students suffer from the segmentation of courses, the stifling of critical thinking, poor educational integration and the relegation of disciplinary “dirty work”. In privileged establishments, the democratic deficit rather encourages utilitarianism, and the development of an anti-school youth culture ; in lower class French colleges students who are failing may also resist through other forms of violence

Knerr, Amanda. "The effectiveness of Making Achievement Possible (MAP) reports in aiding residence hall directors in hall decision-making." Virtual Press, 2002. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1230603.

Full text

Abstract:

The purpose was to assess the extent of use of Making Achievement Possible reports in aiding hall directors in making decisions for their hall in five areas: academic initiatives, hall activities, disciplinary proceedings, conversations with students, and assessing community. Current hall directors were surveyed during January 2002 regarding use of MAP reports in these areas. Two focus groups were held to gain more specific examples of report use, to determine possible changes, and to identify factors that affect use in decision-making. It was determined that the reports are used in academic initiatives, disciplinary proceedings, and in assessing community strengths, but are not used in other areas of job responsibility. Issues that affected use included time, training, and the amount of information found on the report. Training in basic research methodology and in applying results to practice could lead to better utilization of the MAPP reports in hall decision-making.

Oddsdóttir, Charlotta. "Development of endometrial fibrosis in the mare : factors involved in tissue remodelling and collagen deposition." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/4218.

Full text

Abstract:

Age-related degeneration of the equine endometrium is an established and important cause of fertility problems in thoroughbred mares, causing great loss to the industry. As a part of the age-related endometrial degeneration complex, an excessive deposition of collagen leading to endometrial fibrosis is particularly important due to the limitations it causes to uterine function. The consequences include reduced efficacy of uterine defence mechanisms and a decrease in the uterine capacity for foetal nutrition. Extensive research into the process of fibrosis in other organs has shown that this condition results from the malfunction of physiological tissue repair mechanisms. These mechanisms revolve around tissue fibroblasts that due to continuous stimulation secrete excessive amounts of collagen and inhibit the activation of factors essential to the normal collagen degradation occurring in scar resolution. Among these factors are the MMPs, an enzyme family with the ability to degrade extracellular matrix components such as collagen during the normal repair mechanisms following tissue injury. The malfunction in the regulation of these enzymes is important in the development of fibrosis in the liver and other organs. In this study it was demonstrated that MMPs are involved in the acute uterine inflammatory response and that they were secreted by infiltrating inflammatory cells. The cellular mechanisms observed during endometritis in normal mares were comparable to the normal repair mechanisms known to be altered in the fibrosis of other organs. These enzymes were present in equine foetal fluids, and their regulation may be important in the process of abortion and stillbirth. It was demonstrated that inbreeding may be correlated with increased deposition of endometrial collagen in a study population of the Icelandic horse breed even though this breed appears to exhibit less severe endometrial degeneration than what is known in lighter breeds. It is likely that genetic predisposition leads to the disruption of normally self-limiting inflammatory and repair mechanisms in the endometrium, resulting in constant activation of collagen synthesis by local and infiltrating cells. This thesis has shown that tissue repair mechanisms involving MMPs are likely to be involved in endometrial fibrosis in the mare. An inherent alteration in these mechanisms may play a role in the pathogenesis of this condition, and might arise due to genetic predisposition. Further understanding of the pathways leading to excess collagen amounts in the endometrium may produce preventative measures, and even therapeutic targets.

Abstract:

The abdominal aorta (AA) in man is a vulnerable artery prone to atherosclerosis as well as aneurysmatic dilation. The underlying aortic composition, mechanical properties as well as the mechanisms responsible for age-related changes and vascular disease are however largely unknown. The aims of this study were 1) to characterize the age- and gender-related changes of the aortic wall components in vivo, using a mechanical model based on ultrasound measurements of pulsatile aortic diameter changes combined with intra-arterial pressure; 2) to validate ultrasound measurements of diameter and intima-media thickness (IMT) of the AA in order to calculate wall stress; 3) to study the stress driven remodeling response of the aortic wall in healthy individuals and the influence of age and gender; and 4) to study wall stress and remodeling of the AA in diabetic patients in order to elucidate the protective influence of diabetes on abdominal aortic aneurysm formation. The stiffness of the isotropic material (mainly elastin) increased in males despite the known decrease in elastin content with age. Further, an exponential increase in stiffness of the anisotropic material (mainly collagen) in males at high physiological pressure was found. This might be due to changed isoforms of collagen and increased glycation with age. Females were less affected than males. The reproducibility of the ultrasound measurements of diameter and IMT in the AA was acceptable (CV; 4% and 11% respectively), making it possible to calculate circumferential aortic wall stress in vivo. The age-related remodeling of the arterial wall led to increased diameter, and compensatory thickening of the wall preventing the circumferential wall stress from increasing in the common carotid artery of males and females, and the AA of females. However, the compensatory increase in wall thickness was defect in the male AA, where stress increased with age. Pulsatile stress influenced the material parameters of the AA, leading to increased stiffness of anisotropic material (mainly collagen), whereas stiffness of isotropic material (mainly elastin) was unaffected. Patients with diabetes mellitus had increased aortic wall thickness than controls, generating less circumferential stress. This coincides with the known reduction of abdominal aortic aneurysms in diabetic patients and may act as a protective factor.

Abstract:

ABSTRACT - Collagen deposition in equine placenta: possible connection with mare’s age and foal’s weight - In older mares, increasing collagen fibers in the endometrium predisposes to sub-fertility and infertility. Since when collagen is present in the mare endometrium it also is in the oviduct, we hypothesized that it could also exist in the placenta, and therefore contribute for a lower weight of the newborn foal. Thus, the main objective of this study was to evaluate (quantitatively and qualitatively) the presence of collagen fibres in mare’s placenta with ageing and its putative relationship with neonate birth weight. The placenta was weighed immediately after its expulsion and the foal was weighed 24h post-partum. Tissue samples were collected from the gravid horn, non-gravid horn and body of the placenta from younger mares, under 10 years of age (Young; n=7), and from older mares, between 10 and 15 years old (Aged; n=9), of different breeds. They were placed in 4% formaldehyde (for histological studies) and in RNA Later (for determination of transcripts and protein). The presence of collagen in the placenta was determined by the quantification of transcripts of COL1A1, COL1A2, COL3A1 and COL5A1 by real-time PCR, and of total collagen protein, indirectly assessed based on hydroxyproline concentration. In addition, a qualitative histological evaluation of collagen type I and III was performed in placenta sections stained with Picrosirius Red and observed under light microscope, under a polarized light beam. The thickness of the chorionic plate connective tissue of the equine placenta pregnant horn was also evaluated. Data were analysed by one-way ANOVA followed by the respective post-hoc tests or by Pearson´s correlation test (GraphPad Prism and Statistica 7). There was an increase in mRNA levels of COL1A1, COL3A1 and COL5A1 and of hydroxyproline in the pregnant horn of old mares (≥ 10 years; p<0.05). In addition, the connective tissue thickness of the chorionic plate in the equine placenta pregnant horn was bigger in old mares when compared to young mares (p<0.05). A positive correlation was observed between foal’s weight and placenta’s weight (R = 0.7284; p=0.001), as well as, between foal´s weight and the age of the mare (R= 0.6596; p=0.005). Although no correlation was found between the total collagen present in the placenta and the age of the mare, nor the weight of the foal, fibrosis, which is characterized by increased collagen fibre deposition, was higher in the pregnant horn of old mares’ placentas. This has been considered as a sign of placental insufficiency in other species, with a putative negative outcome in the weight of the neonate.

Abstract:

HIV/AIDS is a growing concern in the African American community. From 2005 to 2008, there was a 12% increase in HIV/AIDS diagnoses among African Americans (CDC, 2010a). African American males have higher rates of HIV/AIDS diagnoses than any other ethnic or racial groups. In 2006, 65% of the HIV/AIDS cases among African Americans were from adult males (CDC, 2010a). These higher rates are in part attributed to higher levels of sexual risk-taking including unprotected sex, sex with multiple partners, and sex with high-risk partners. African American adult men get tested at almost the same rate (52%) as African American women 53% (CDC, 2007). HIV testing is important to the prevention of HIV/AIDS and can result in substantial reductions in risk behaviors (Marks, Crepaz, & Janssen, 2006; Weinhardt, Carey, Johnson, & Bickham, 1999). Masculinity, a man’s concept of what it means to be man, influences engagement in sexual risk-taking behaviors (Bowleg, 2004, Duck, 2009; Lichtenstein, 2004), as well as health-seeking behaviors (Hammond, Matthews, Mohottige, Agyemang, & Corbie-Smith, 2010; Royster, Richmond, Eng, & Margolis, 2006). One form of masculinity, hypermasculinity is related to sexual risk-taking behaviors, especially among young African American males. The purpose of this dissertation was to investigate the relationship between hypermasculinity and sexual risk-taking, and HIV testing among African American males. One hundred twenty-six African American male college students were recruited to participate in an HIV prevention intervention for African American women on a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) campus. Prior to participating in the intervention, participants completed a questionnaire with measures of hypermasculinity, sexual behavior, and HIV testing. The results showed that hypermasculinity predicted frequency of sex. Hypermasculinity and frequency of sex predicted lifetime HIV testing. Frequency of sex and the number of sex partners predicted current HIV testing (in the past month). The interaction between hypermasculinity and frequency of sex was marginally significant. The findings from this research may increase our understanding of sexual risk-taking, improve HIV testing initiatives, and be useful in the development of HIV prevention programs for African American heterosexual males.

Abstract:

My subject of thesis in visual arts is based on a personal practice of the notebook that I have been carrying on since the end of my studies at the university of Rennes 2. These sketchbooks trace travel, career and life experiments by mixing and intermingling different languages: writing, graphics, collages and photography. I wish to infuse a reflexive and speculative dimension to this production in order to catch its plastic and iconic methods and to understand its challenges. To achieve this, I will study works in the light of social sciences (sociology, anthropology, geography, etc) and sciences of Arts (art history, aesthetics, poetics). In the same way I will confront them with a corpus of historical, contemporary and current work-references in order to reveal their affinities and specificities. What does the notebook imply? The perception of the present moment, the will to understand, the links with the artistic and cultural heritage, the relationship to the contemporary world down to its thinnest elements? Other more complex things such as self-construction, development of a graphic or plastic identity? The attempt to answer these questions enables a possible opening of this practice of carnettist towards the world of school. As a regional school Inspector for Visual Arts and a former teacher in lower and upper secondary school for that discipline, I wonder about teaching methods to provide pupils with a cultural and artistic background by using notebooks or workbook that became notebooks. Could it be the tool for young people to acquire in a constructive, playful and colourful way to enhance their approach to the artistic universe through the scholar prism? Beyond the artistic and theoretical personal involvement, this thesis could find a pragmatic application and an experimental implementation at school in a broad sense, i.e. from school to university

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to explore how supportive functions of parent-child relationships influence young adult dating motivations and involvement. Theoretical literature suggests that emotionally supportive homes provide a secure base for children to depend on as they explore themselves and other relationships. However, problematic family ties could be expected to inhibit relationship involvement due to negative past experiences or to encourage involvement as a search for intimacy. A sample of 206 single, female undergraduates completed questionnaires assessing relationships with parents and aspects of romantic involvement and development. The set of Parent-Child Relationship variables included Support, Conflict, Depth, and Affective Quality in relationships with mother and father. The Attachment Related Dating Motivation variables included measures of Anxiety, Dependency, and Closeness in relationships, Attachment Motivation, Sexual Expression, Dating Exploration, Behavioral Indicators of Romantic Involvement, Sexual Involvement, and Level, Satisfaction, and Importance of Romantic Involvement.

Abstract:

This work contributes to knowledge of theatrical performances in Parisian colleges in the sixteenth century through the editing, translation and analysis of two Latin tragedies written by students at the College of Navarre. The manuscript plays were almost contemporary and were both inspired by French secular history. The Dire Fate of the French in the Vermandois Region and the Distressing Fall of the Most Valiant Duke of Estouteville and Count of Enghien (Paris, 1557, Bibl. nat. ms fonds latin 8136) was written by a teacher from Rouen, Abel Souris, and laments the tragic fall of Jean de Bourbon, recently killed in the battle of Saint-Quentin. Chilperic (Paris, [1558], bibl. mun. Chaumont ms 213 (3-I-5 k)) was the work of Jean Rose, a fifteen-years-old student from Chaumont, who was familiar with Paolo¡Emili s and Robert Gaguin s History of the Franks. It stages the cruelty of the Merovingian king and his murder instigated by his adulterous wife Fredegund. A study of the literary sources of both plays reveals a sound knowledge of Seneca, of course, but also of the work of contemporary neo-Latin dramatists, Buchanan, Muret and Roillet. Special attention has been paid to the scholastic context (research into the college, its students and its library of the humanities in 1557-1558) and to accounts of theatrical activity at the College of Navarre (performances in 1533 and 1572). The authors later lives one became an ecclesiastic and the other a magistrate have been carefully reconstructed through archival research

Abstract:

This Master’s thesis research whether managers in Nacka municipality in Sweden consider their employees’ work environment, when implementing new digital systems. The research is written within the framework of a research project called KomDig. KomDig is an acronym in Swedish for Municipal and Digital. The research aims to increase awareness on the digital work environment. A qualitative method has been conducted, to gain a deeper understanding of how management in the municipal sector considers their employee’s working environment, when implementing new digital technology. Empirical data has been collected from twelve interviews with different managers and security officers at various units and departments within Nacka municipality. Empirical data has also been collected from the municipality´s websites, reports and governments documentation. The first three interviews were conducted through physical meetings, and the last nine where conducted through video calls like Teams or Zoom, due to the restrictions during the Corona pandemic. The theoretical framework evolves around the organizational theory, socio-technical approach as well as implementation theory. These theories have been selected to create an understanding of the importance of an organization’s structure when new digital systems are implemented as well as how new systems are implemented. In order to create an understanding of what is essential to maintain manageability and meaningfulness when work environment is changing, such as increased digitalization, the model KASAM has been utilized. KASAM is used to create a sense of coherence to the change of work environment, The research shows that management takes their employees´ work environment into account when implementing digital systems, however, the result shows that there is differences depending on which units that has been reviewed. There are examples of previous implementations where employees and customers have been negatively affected and where costs have radically increased. The newly introduced departments for digitalization along with new strategies for digitalization indicates that they now are on the right track in the way they are implementing new digital systems. Both management and employees are optimistic to continue the implementation together with the strategy for digitalization the result has created a good understanding for the aspects of importance in future implementations, which is promising for the municipality´s future development. The research also shows that NPM contributed to the municipality’s customer focus, results and effectiveness. It also shows that the municipality follows the trend towards increased digitalization in the public sector, which been advocated by the government.

Abstract:

This is a critical edition of the early fifteenth-century narrative prose The Lyf of Oure Lord and the Virgyn Aary in MS Trinity College Cambridge B.15.42 and MS Bodley 578. The work claims to be a translation of the Pseudo-Bonaventuran Xeditationes Vitae Christi and has usually been regarded as such by scholars. However, the NYC provides no more than the narrative structure and less than half of the narrative material for the Lyf. Crucially, the Lyf diverges strongly from the meditational character of the NYC. Other important sources of the Lyf are the Bible, St Bernard, and st Bridget's Revelations. At least eight further sources, both Latin and English, were used. From these works too the Lyf drew mostly narrative, as opposed to didactic or devotional, material. Where sources conflict, the Lyf suppresses one or the other in order to keep the narrative line clear. Another important aspect of the Lyf that emerges from the choice and treatment of the sources is the importance attached to the role of Mary. The number of sources and their skilful deployment point to a fairly scholarly author/compiler, writing for a devout lay or female religious audience. Comparison with other important lives of Christ, notably Nicholas Love's Xyrrour, shows that the Lyf is much less meditational, devotional and didactic. It is perhaps closest to the Speculum Devotorum. The Cambridge MS is written in a WarwickshireWorcestershire- Gloucestershire dialect, whereas the language of the Bodley MS can be localized in Surrey-Berkshire-Hampshire. The Cambridge MS is the more carefully executed copy and therefore serves as base text, complemented by the Bodley MS in cases of lost leaves. There is a full apparatus of Bodley variants, and there are Textual Notes, Explanatory Notes and a Glossary.

Abstract:

This dissertation is based on the need to respond to the difficulties of teaching science by taking into account the singularity of the learner, but also by giving sense to learning. Nowadays, didactic(s) only partially respond(s) to this problem. Evidence of it is that there are always a number of learners in difficulty or even failure at school. What we suggest is an updated instrumental didactic as a response to that situation. It is based on Vygotski's instrumental theory, which mentions that cultural development enriches biological development, and that learners construct themselves via concepts, and that language is one of the first psychological instruments that organizes human thought.Starting from an interdisciplinary project in Physical Sciences and Physical Education, with the concept of atom as a theme, we propose to implement that new didactic, based on the analysis of the conceptions of 660 secondary school goers from 1st year to 7th year (math mention) on the object of learning, working within their Zone of proximal development (ZPD).The main activity was carefully selected so as to be adapted and adaptable to any learner. To make it so we identified the changing levels of a student's knowledge in cognomorphosis and cognogenesis during their learning. Four experiments both in lower and higher secondary school were carried out and enabled us to account for the modes of thought of the students at each stage of the learning. They have shown the relevance of the use of a mind map, designed as a scaffolding device by Bruner, and specially designed towards learners in first and second year of lower secondary school as well as the higher secondary school. This dissertation, which, to back up its very own conclusions, uses experiments and methods directly related to the principles of the instrumental didactic that it wishes to promote. Besides it has for vocation to promote research in that specific field, and bring a real professional usefulness to science teachers

Robinson, Rose Marie. "Regulation of Bovine Mammary Epithelial Cell Response by Autocrine IGF-I and by Collagen I." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/26520.

Full text

Abstract:

Understanding how insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) signaling in mammary epithelial cells may be modified or interrupted by modifications in the cellular environment may lead to 1) methods to increase the growth and proliferation of normal mammary epithelial cells for an increase in the amount of milk produced on a per animal basis or to 2) the development of medical interventions to disrupt the growth and proliferation of cancerous mammary epithelial cells. IGF-I, a signaling protein provided by stromal cells and through the bloodstream, stimulates the proliferation of mammary epithelial cells and is crucial for mammary development. Collagen I is an extracellular matrix protein (ECM) found in skin and in other connective tissues throughout the body. The guiding question in this dissertation was how IGF-I signaling and how binding protein profile were influenced by autocrine IGF-I and by collagen I. The MAC-T cell line was chosen as the cell model utilized in these investigations because it is an immortalized bovine mammary epithelial cell line known to retain hormonal responsiveness to IGF-I.It was hypothesized that the production of IGF-I by mammary epithelial cells (autocrine secretion) would alter the response of these cells to additional IGF-I by de-sensitizing the IGF-I receptor on the cell surface. The normal mammary epithelial cell does not produce IGF-I and responds to IGF-I supplied either by stromal cells (paracrine pathway) or through the bloodstream (endocrine pathway). The IGF-I secreting bovine mammary epithelial cell line was investigated for the response of the cells to autocrine IGF-I, and the response was compared to the normal, parental cell line. To examine the effect of autocrine IGF-I on the cells, IGF-I was added both to MAC-T cells and to cells transfected to secrete IGF-I (SV40-IGF-I). The cell response of the two cell lines was compared using microphysiometry, a tool that measures IGF-IR stimulation by detecting resultant extracellular acidification. It was found that the SV40-IGF-I cell line retains IGF-I receptor sensitivity, yet, unlike the parental cell line, does not proliferate in response to IGF-I. Both cell lines exhibited increased protein synthesis in response to IGF-I as measured by amino acid uptake (AIB incorporation), but the lack of a proliferation response to additional IGF-I in the SV40-IGF-I cell line suggested that the autocrine cell line exhibited an un-coupling of IGF-IR stimulation with downstream cell proliferation. Both autocrine IGF-I and added IGF-I increased the amount of IGFBP-3 secreted by the cells into growth media.Additionally, it was hypothesized that the presence of collagen I, an important ECM protein, would alter the cell production of insulin-like binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3), a protein that modulates IGF-I interaction with the IGF-I receptor (IGF-IR). The literature reports that surface substrate can affect the phenotypic expression of cells, presumably via interaction with integrins, the cell surface receptors that connect cells to ECM proteins and that are responsible for cell adhesion and for cell migration. It was hypothesized that the MAC-T cells would interact with a collagen I surface (possibly via the a2b1 integrin) and that the stimulation of this transmembrane signaling molecule would in turn impact the IGF-I signaling pathway. Comparison studies on tissue culture plastic, collagen I BIOCOAT, and collagen I gel were performed. It was found that collagen I gel increased IGFBP-3 secretion and decreased insulin-like binding protein-2 (IGFBP-2) secretion in MAC-T cells. The collagen I BIOCOAT did not induce this response.Additional studies were performed to determine if there were differences in IGF-IR phosphorylation, exogenous IGF-I utilization, and IGFBP mRNA production by cells cultured on the three different substrates. IGF-IR phosphorylation was only evident following the addition of IGF-I to MAC-T cells on all three substrates. Measurement of residual IGF-I present in the cultured media of cells on all three substrates by radioimmunoassay did not reveal any differences in the amount of IGF-I present. Northern blot analysis revealed that the addition of IGF-I caused an increase in detected IGFBP-3 mRNA and a decrease in detected IGFBP-2 mRNA across all three surfaces. As measured by ligand blot analysis, cells cultured on all three surfaces showed an increase in IGFBP-3 protein in the media with IGF-I addition, and the collagen I gel showed more IGFBP-3 protein than the other two surfaces. However, cells cultured on collagen I gel showed a decrease in IGFBP-2 protein expression compared to cells cultured on tissue culture both with and without the addition of IGF-I. Cells cultured on tissue culture plastic and on collagen I BIOCOAT did not show a decrease in IGFBP-2 to correspond with the decreased IGFBP-2 mRNA detected in the presence of IGF-I on all three substrates. DNA assays to detect cell proliferation revealed no differences in cell DNA content in the absence of exogenous IGF-I and revealed similar increases in response to IGF-I addition on all three substrates. In conclusion, it was found that autocrine IGF-I un-couples increased IGF-IR stimulation by exogenous IGF-I from a downstream cell proliferation response. IGFBP-3 inhibits the ability of IGF-I to interact with the IGF-IR in MAC-T cells and inhibits subsequent cell proliferation. Collagen I gel increases IGFBP-3 secretion and decreases IGFBP-2 secretion by MAC-T cells. The relevance of this work is that it adds to the body of knowledge in understanding cellular function in mammary epithelial cells. It is known that the growth and the maintenance of living tissue are dependent on an intricate system of intercellular and intracellular responses which are orchestrated by the movement and secretion of proteins and other molecules. Goals of understanding mammary epithelial cell function include having the means to find ways to increase cell functionality via bioengineering and having the means to find ways to restore cells to normal function in disease processes such as cancer.

Abstract:

Grounded on empirical investigations in two ordinary cities of emerging countries – Vitória in Brazil and Coimbatore in India – we argue that solid waste management in Southern cities cannot be conceived excluding the so-called “informal” actors at the risk of fiasco. Such an assessment is nowadays broadly acknowledged, yet its reasons are not always made explicit. We start from the empirical observation of appropriation conflicts, which arise with the introduction of municipal selective collection schemes and which transcend the “Big private operator versus small wastepickers” dichotomy. These clashes lead us to formulate the following central question: to whom do solid wastes –this res derelictae- belong to, taking into account that their very definition lies in abandonment. That is what our research aims at: confronting economic theory to an urban planning approach we show that the urban solid waste deposit corresponds to an impure public good (or evil!), a blurred object characterized by rivalry and non-exclusion. This is particularly due to transhipments in the evacuation service, as well as to the commodity value of a growing number of items – on condition that they should be recovered at source. Finally, taking a zoom-out in order to apprehend this issue through a global lens, we argue that the local dry waste sales business is directly determined by raw material prices fluctuations. The global economy impact on a local urban service leads us to acknowledge urban mining strategies which renew the appropriations' legitimacy question

Abstract:

This thesis takes as its area of exploration the papal chapel choir and its repertory, alongside the papacy and its patronage of the arts at the end of the fifteenth century. It draws on previous research concerning the singers, polyphonic manuscripts and artistic culture of the Vatican, but places Pope Alexander VI as the central figure of the thesis, showing schemes of patronage that shaped his reign. The research presents a transcription and analysis of the hymn cycle contained within the manuscript Cappella Sistina 15, alongside an assessment of the polyphonic music collection and places these against accounts of music making and evidence of music copying at the papal chapel during Alexander’s reign. The thesis also considers the environment of secular music making at Alexander’s court. In order to provide a context in which to understand this information, the life of Alexander VI is examined, tracing his artistic patronage and involvement with music both prior to his election and afterwards. Of particular note is the engagement of the artist Pintoricchio to decorate the papal apartments. Here, the artist’s representation of music as part of the seven liberal arts is analysed, providing a unique, contemporary and important insight into music practices in Alexander’s court. Three classifications of patronage are identified for Alexander’s reign, while also showing that these were strategies that he had used before he became pope. The music culture at the papal chapel is shown to be part of this strategy, through the consolidation of old music and the introduction of new music into the repertory, ending a task that had taken approximately 60 years. It shows that Alexander’s reign was an important period musically, that instituted new musical traditions and created an environment that prepared the way for the golden ages of patronage of Julius II and Leo X.

Tabutiaux, Benoit. Thesis, Grenoble, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014GRENM091.

Full text

Abstract:

Most of the developments issued from the research in man computer dialogue management are mainly focused on functional dialogue and put aside entertainment dialogue. A sharper context description and goals recognition remains quite limited to fully grasp the stakes of type of dialogue. The thesis aims to demonstrate that a system based on a thin and robust recognition of dialogue acts and intentions linked to a consideration for the concept of relation of otherness, ethics and emotions could leads to the emergence of a dialogic personality. Such a system would be able to interact with a human being in a credible way and reproduce some of its achievements in the context of a seduction dialogue. Unlike the common approach developed for intelligence tests, the purpose is not to mimic a human, but to manage the dialogue based on the notion of interest. To achieve this goal, researches deal with the relation of otherness applied to dialogue within game theory and especially through the concepts of Self-definition, Discourse Ethics and Emotions Modeling. The corpora collection process follows many ways including collaborative games. At the end, the character model is developed using a movie script corpora on the basis of a new dialogue phenomena taxonomy including perlocutionary acts and a new approach of knowledge that incorporate ethics and the relation of otherness. It leads to a thinner description of dialogue strategies. A scene extracted from a movie aims to validate the final architecture as an experimental framework
